Towing Capacity for 2014 RAM 1500 Lineup

Everyone at Royal Chrysler Jeep Dodge has been curious to find out about the new towing capacity of the 2014 RAM 1500 lineup, and now our patience has been rewarded. Dodge recently released this information and we would like to pass it down to you.

The new RAM 1500 will achieve a  best-in-class tow rating with 7,450 lbs when equipped with the 305-hp Pentastar V-6 engine. That means it has the best tow rating of any V-6 pickup currently on the market.

Mike Cairns, Chief Engineer for RAM, explains what kinds of edits needed to be made to achieve this best-in-class tow rating, stating, "There was more towing capacity in the V-6 Ram 1500 but we needed to upgrade the transmission to hold the truck and trailer when parked on steep grades. Now that we're building the transmissions ourselves, the improvements are included in the new assembly."1

Another option in the Ram lineup is the new 3.0-liter EcoDiesel engine, available later this year at an upgraded cost of $2,850. This workhorse will give V-8-equipped trucks some tough competition thanks to its very impressive towing capacity of 9,200 lbs. That's only 50 lbs less than the RAM 1500 equipped with the 5.7-liter V-8 engine. But the benefits are worth forfeiting the 50 pounds. The diesel engine is expected to have a fuel economy rating 25 mpg on the highway.
